What Does Everyone Do For A Living?

i work in drug discovery as a biological research technician (i'm a lab monkey). broadly, i do cancer and infectious disease research. i used to write methods for, and perform assays with, our robotic liquid-handling and storage systems. i've also grown, sustained and worked with highly infectious pathogens - bacteria, specifically. one of my favorite things to tell people is, "I know how to make anthrax spores!" (i really do, btw)

i really enjoy this job and tbh, this is my (realistic) "dream job". i love it. but, if i could put everything down and just DO something, without any prior experience or skin-in-the-game, i'd like to direct movies... or maybe write fantasy books... or something

umm, I worked washing windows in the summer!?? (And the school year.)

I'm majoring in Chemical Physics, my plan is grad school and then do research somewhere. Pretty open ended. I'd love to work with new/novel materials though, perhaps super conductors or stuff with computing.

This is all the plan unless my love of physics overtakes my love of chem (we'll see once I get to Quantum Mechanics!)

All you silly old people and already having your jobs.

stable, ever consider moving to the bay area? a buddy of mine is a PhD - a physical chemist - go figure. he talks about working with very similar stuff to which you describe. check out my company, we're truly right up your alley: SRI International | An Independent Nonprofit Research Institute . i work in biosciences, but we're a multi-disciplinary institution; the chemistry and materials or sensing and devices (where my friend works) would be of interest to you.

how far are you into your studies? have you interned anywhere? my buddy also supervises interns in the summer. just a thought :) if you're interested, we should talk.

X-Ray Techs... Ultrasound Techs... etc... they make great money without a 4yr degree. When I found out how much they make after only 2yrs of school, I was wishing I went that route instead. Then I step inside a hospital and realize I would have never made it, lol.

I've done my research on best 2 year degrees, since I don't particularly enjoy going to school. Well, I shouldn't say that. I like learning about things I'm interested in, not general education. Math can suck a dick. I think the highest level of math I got to was titled "High School Math" in 2003. hahahah Anyway, I've been thinking about radiology for a while now, I've always been fascinated by X-rays and it does pay well for only 2 years of school.

And a weird story that pertains to the whole 2 year degree topic. One other career I was considering was Respiratory Therapist, which is 2 years and pays equally as well as a radiology technician. One day in LA, I was on the train and some random dude started talking to me, and one thing led to another without me mentioning it, and he said his brother was a RT and said he could see me doing it and told me to. hahah So maybe I'll listen to that man, I haven't decided yet.

Carpenter. Work in construction. CONCRETE baby. ya!
dream job...hmm.. Probably take over Captain Jean-Luc Picard's job.
:lulz:

Title: VS1 Supervisor (Value Stream 1 Supervisor) Basically I babysit a bunch of children and adults and process their problems on their machines while they mold silicone medical parts that go into the body, open heart surgery, premature baby masks, all sorts of things. On top of baby sitting and processing machine issues I do a lot of paper work and charts to show on time delivery trends in my value stream. Learning kaizen stuff as well. Pretty new to the position but it pays well and it tops out at 85k. I wanna take this experience and turn it into some white collar work hopefully someday.

Dream job would be a piece of shit trust fund baby or independently wealthy scum of the earth that everyone would love to hate.

Yea, I'm in Davis now, so it's as far away. I'm here at UC Davis as a junior- I've got two years left here. I was going to find out about undergrad research next week, but I've never had the opportunity to intern anywhere, either. My curiosity is piqued :)
