Monitor Talk: PPI and Refresh Rate

Hey Guys,

I've got a question for you all. When shopping for the most awesome monitor on earth for gaming, it seems to me the most important criteria is the size, pixels per square inch, and the refresh rate.

My question is, why is it so rare that manufacturers will post this info in the specs? Every time I go shopping online or in store, nobody can ever tell me this upfront, or I can't find the info. The size by diagonal measure is readily displayed, sometimes the refresh rate, but never the ppi.

Anyone have tips/tricks for identifying the most awesome gaming monitor with regards to definition/clarity? I'd love to know.

If I've got the criteria all backwards let me know. What do yo go by?

you can calculate the ppi by the size and res. the refresh rate is usually listed, but they don't tell you how its measured (eg grey-to-grey). i usually research my choices online way before going to any store to check them out. in fact, the last 3 i bought i didnt even bother vieweing in store - just got 'em via amazon (back when they had no tax). tftcentral, avsforum, and [H] are great resources when researching which monitor to choose. personally, i prefer the bigscreens. while the pixel density isn't there, the size is just too big to deny.

Online shopping is well and good, but for my impatient ass, I like to get my merchandise immediately after the point of purchase.

But as for a solution for finding monitor ppi on the fly, I guess I can just use my phone to visit pixeldensitycalculator.com/.

Thanks man, definitely value the input!

and if you dont have a signal, its just the Pythagorean theorem...
a² + b² = c²
1920² + 1080² = 3686400 + 1166400 = 4852800
(4852800)[SUP]½[/SUP] = 2203

2203/37 = 59.5ppi (my westy)

just keep popular resolutions in your notes. what resolution monitor are you looking for? Most are 1080p these days. 1920 x 1200 would have a diagonal pixel size of 2264.
