Data mining

What's your opinion on data mining, either on the "sure, I don't care." or "no, I don't want pp to know" side.
There are so much data out there via internet, social media that the big companies are studying up on the general population. To be frankly, "they" have more data than they know what to do with. They say given someone's sex, birthday, and zip code, they can narrow down 87% of the Americans. Look up "Nate Silver" or simply google "data mining" to find out more.

Recently I've been looking for APPs or tools to minimize my digital footprint. Does anyone have any recommendations?

i dont care about certain data and clicks being mined so long as it does not directly get thrown back in my face via telemarketing calls or mail.

I gave up on trying to hide my tracks on the internet. Theres so many ways to track you and the fact that our government tracks you regardless. The only thing I do is removing my geotagging :p

Google knows pretty much everything about me, where I go. On a map, it's pretty much a solid dot by my computer with a trail to my fridge & toilet. I have little to hide (except unreported income, mistress, a few dead bodies...).

only the IRS (and CA FTB), your wife, and the police/FBI care about that stuff? Google analytics will now try to sell you fancy toilets and smart-fridges.

I'm all for a toilet with Candy Crush pre-installed. Would save a lot of phone/tablet battery life.

I think it's irrelevant to care at this point. They've been doing it alot longer than anyone's cared about it, and the headstart they have on gathering info on everyone and anyone is probably insurmountable.

My opinion is it a violation of my civil rights... but knowing that the all seeing eye is out there and that it has been out there for long before we all knew about it. Seems like a situation that is too late to repair. With Facebook, Google, Twitter and other sites out there the only way to be anonymous is to remove your self from online activity all together now, in the future, and above all in the past. Which is impossible. True privacy is no longer an option for the great majority of the people in our country.
