It seems I have more questions than answers :shame: But I just bought a Raspberry Pi b+ v1. Now I need some ideas for what to do with it! I bought it with the intent of familiarizing myself with Linux and all the different flavors. Because I don't want to partition my SSD and I'm too cheap to buy a third hard drive just to mess around with Linux. Anyone have any ideas as to where I should start? Any good versions of Linux I should check out? I'm open to try any distro, as long as it doesn't cost me money :p

for 30 dollars. Sounded like a deal to me! I've browsed a couple of other forums for ideas. Just thought I'd ask 47r what you guys thought :notworthy:
 
i was planning on turning mine into an NES emulator... but then i got lazy. i also wanted one for a car PC, but then i got an ipad, lol.
 
I ve been using ubuntu on desktop pc for a longtime now. I use it for practicing unix commands, LAN, and CS dedicated server. If you have time and motivation, linux is for you. Ubuntu is free.
 
Zoned media control, home security, home automation, habitat control (currently used for fish tank lighting, water control and feeding. Planning on adding feeding and watering for animals), and game trail cam.

Two projects currently in the works are a "GoTo" with auto guiding system for my new scopes, so I can do astrophotoghraphy. The other is an interface for my jeep. The concept is a device that installs in the radio bay which can be used as a radio(includes a BT connection or USB for external libraries), nav(includes weather conditions), autotuner, lighting control, environmental controls, and wench controls. The wench and lights will be able to take voice commands from a BT earpiece. The jeep control is still just concept. The telescope control is almost ready for build stage.

Some day projects are a ROV and a UAV

If the raspberry is going to be used for a media server or retro console emulator or both there is plenty of power. However, if you want to play "newer" games(console or pc) check for compatibility. For a media server OS I suggest OSMC. For an OS check out Pidora or Raspbian. Just depends on if you are a Fedora or Debian fan. If you try others, you may already know this, but some of the distros have "ARM" in the title. This is most likely the version you will need for raspberry.

If you like to tinker, this is a great device to do it with.
