Why?
The WRX I have has been paid for most of the seven years I've owned it.
Before purchasing the WRX I test drove that model years EVO, I wanted to love it and hated it. I hated the cheap interior, especially considering the price of the car, the six speed drove me crazy in five minutes of traffic to get to the highway on ramp. I was ready to return to the dealership after two red lights. The seating position feels just like a 1997 Camry, odd for a sport sedan, the WRX just feels lower and wider, I just clicked with it instantly an hour after testing the EVO. I can't deny that the cast iron block on the EVO is better for pumping tons of PSI plus they have the added advantage of a very short exhaust to turbo pipe length.
I like my 5 speed WRX, it has great gear spacing and is just easy to drive for hours on end. This car is pretty damn clean and getting cleaner with some work, the whole point of spending the bit of money was making it a bit more then it was and saving myself another massive money sink in the ever depreciating value on a pretty massive expense; the purchasing of a new car. If I buy myself another four years I'll be happy. I just need to fix the few things I felt the car was lacking.
I took care of the power department, I don't need anymore then it has currently, seriously. With the stock suspension on a couple roads around here it is almost dangerous how quickly the chassis gets unsettled with that soft setup. Just going through the first three gears has me nearing 80 to grab fourth just before redline. I can't even imagine trying to drive this car with the guys running E85 and 475 HP & 550 TQ. It just gets to be too much work to drive the car and then it is no longer any fun all day long. I will grab some coilovers and a good set of f\r swaybars and my car should be pretty dialed. It is almost wallowing soft currently, makes it much more work to get through the corners.
Yes and no. One pipe will fail visual inspection, regardless of the fact that the catalytic converter I have in my down pipe burns cleaner then does the stock one. On the sniff test my car would be well below state standards. Not OEM, fail. I will just swap for the inspection window, about a forty minute job each time. It is just absurd how they have this state sanctioned monopoly, pay ridiculous amounts for a crappy part to be legal. Buy a part at half the cost of stock, that exceeds state standards and still fail a smog check.

Yeh. Same reasons I don't want to mess around too much with my engine. I've read about smog check nightmares on forums. Seems you getting much more smiles/gallon, and that's what matters.
