What's new

processors

ok, so I'm still confused. I've had this deal recommended to me: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1355051

However, I'm still not sure if I should go with the i7. From what I'm reading, some speculate that the new consoles with all their extra cores (albeit weak ones) might cause developers to begin to design games to use 6/8 cores. I don't want to spend $350 to get something that is not as good in a year's time. Anyone know anything about this?

Also, if I did get an i7, does anyone know of a good mobo for it?

Generally speaking a 4 core processor should be plenty, reason I went with a I2700k processor last year.
Multiple cores could be useful if you are into Photoshop/Cinema editing apps.
For games 4 cores is plenty of power.

that's what I've read, but I'm not sure if that is going to be the case in say, 2 years. That's my concern. I would just get the i7, except I was also looking into an SSD and buying both would just be so expensive -__-

Edit: also leaning i5 because in know that hyper-threading just makes "virtual" cores, ones that are not nearly as good as real ones. I just really hate parting with $$, so i realyl make sure I am getting what I need and what will last.

If gaming is the only thing you are mainly planning to do then just go with the i5.
We are in July, if you can hold until Black Friday, then you may get better deals on i5's.

the virtual cores from hyperthreading are, in face, pretty damn useful if the software takes advantage of them. if your upgrades are few and far between, then go with the i7, since it will last you longer. if you're strapped for cash, then the i5 will work just as well, since all you do is play games.
