If you're running X58, it's best to run one SSD in AHCi mode, yeah dont manually defraq the SSD. Wins7 auto detect the SSD and disable the auto-defaq
Honestly, I see no difference running 1 SSD vs 2x in Raid0 for everyday uses, except benchmarks.
Raid them when you go Z77 or above, Intel lastest Rapid-Tech software/driver will have TRIM for SSD raid for those chipsets
 
FT hope those Velociraptor didnt die yet :( Heard Velociraptor had high failrate and lot came in DoA from people.

WD Black Cavier is still the best from WD HDD lines for the price . Velociraptor imo is very overpriced still on the market. Still WD > other brands in terms of reliability right now.

Should look into Asus 248H 24in montior :D really good monitor for the price. Newegg is having that on sale for $160 or $140 right now I paid mine for $220 5months ago :(

Thanks for the input and yeah, have used Raptors several times in the past and certain series have had their quality control issues. THe ones I got are the newest series and use their best design yet, very tiny platter, laptop sized, means low load on the motor and the bearings supporting the whole thing. Some of the early multiple platter designs had so much weight on the multiple platters they would just spin themselves to death.

Right now, kind of a moot point as I ended up buying dual Samsung Pro 512 GB SSD, this is enough total storage for me so I might just sell the Raptors.

For the new monitor, I really want one of the WQHD 27" monitors, just deciding now on which one based on hardware latency and GTG speeds. Trouble is getting all the info to make an informed decision as they tend to hide the really important stuff, for me latency is more important than color accuracy.

My current board is the X58 series Rampage Extreme with an i7 920. If you have any other insights I would love to hear them before tearing this system apart and installing these two drives and seeing how bad Windows 8 really is.

Just what I was about to say when I read you bought two SSDs without the z77 mobo. ;) If you're into tweaking your settings, you can search for "optimizing windows 7 for SSD use" and there are several guides (the one on the OCZ forums is the one I used to use). I haven't read one in a while, and I haven't bothered with those tweaks ever since the original Vertex drives a few years ago (also because win7 auto optimizes now).

With the current speeds of SSDs, RAID0 on multiple drives isn't as noticeable as it was a couple years ago. BTW, even without TRIM, my RAID0 X-18M array is doing just fine on my workstation. :D Oh, and don't forget to backup you're array often. I had a couple Vertex2's on my test system when one of them decided that 3months was just too long of a life; good thing my backup image was able to fit on a single SSD, lol.

Intel's tick/tock cycle was delayed a bit for some embedded chipset dev for MS' Surface dev, or so I hear.

My understanding is that defrag is still not a good idea for the SSD's. BTW, why Samsung? You were hot for Intel a half a year ago.

Damn. I have so many questions I don't know where to start. What I AM sure about though, is it's time civil slacker to go back to work. I want to buy stuff. Lot's of stuff. And then i'm leaving you to go make out and cuddle with my stuff. Nice rig, fast. This is an excellent thread.
 
Oh, I forgot to mention that you could still do RAID0 w/ x58, just don't make the volume the full size of both drives - save about 20% as free. On my x58 workstation, the 2x intel X18-M RAID0 array was not the full size of each drive combined. I actually made the volume the size of one drive; in case one died, I could restore the image onto the other. This proved more useful when Anand showed that leaving some extra space helped GC maintain the drive (since no TRIM support in RAID0 back then; heck even now for x58).

LOL Civil, hugs maybe cuddling definitely not, I run hot anyway.

I went with the Samsung Pro's due to them totally kicking the shit out of every other consumer brand out there. The intel was a great performer with one of the best warranties but Samsung has the same five year warranty and way better performance. Back up with a base install of Windows 8 and well... jury is still out as I am stumbling around trying to figure where the hell everything is at. The interface feels real snappy but when you sit there staring blankly at the screen, it is not the most efficient way to use a computer. This is going to take some time to figure out and get comfortable with, no tablet time for me before.

It is extremely odd to not have the sound of hard drives spinning up and quite honestly, is a bit disconcerting at the moment. I am sure I'll get used to the quiet but I guess I knew before what my computer was doing and never had to look at the hard drive light to see it was actually doing something.

EDIT: Civil, I truly wish a job would fall in your lap so you could get back to life as it should be. Having been out of work for almost seven months on disability, I am truly going stir crazy! The only benefit is that my monthly costs are actually way low and my usual monthly petrol bill is non-existent so I spent that money on a mini upgrade.
 
God I cant imagine not hearing my HDD spinning once I upgrade to SDD in the next 2-3years XD

Don't laugh, it is pretty damn eerie not having some kind of audio feedback that your computer is actually doing some work.
